Cinematic Prototyping — Scan to Scene

Capture a real place on your phone in the morning and shoot a film inside it by the afternoon.

ToolsScaniverse (phone capture) · Gaussian splatting · Unreal Engine 5 (digital twin) · Runway · Kling · Gen-4 style transfer

What it is

Scan-to-Scene is the FRS answer to a problem every designer knows: the idea is spatial and cinematic, and the only way to show it used to be a set build, a camera crew, and a budget. Here you walk out with a phone, capture the space you actually care about — a studio, a shop floor, a corner of the building — and bring it back as a 3D capture you can put a camera inside.

The second half is direction, not software. We block a shot, run it through video generation, and pull a style across it so the sequence reads as one film rather than six clips. This is the method behind the lab's Nintendo: Roadmap to 2030 flagship study, where a real store became a walkable digital twin and then a set of 25-second shots — prompting temporal experience, not just static form.

What you leave with

A short cinematic sequence set inside a place you captured that morning, rendered and ready to show.

Who it is for

This one is open to FIT faculty and students alike. Set aside 3 hours.

Dates

Seat counts are the size of the room, not a live count of who has signed up — if a session has filled, it says so below. Dates are set by the lab and can move.

  1. · 1pm–4pm FRS Lab · 12 seats

Bring a phone with a free 5 GB and a place you want to film in.

  2. · 1pm–4pm FRS Lab · 12 seats

Want it for your class?

This one runs again whenever there is a room and a reason. If the dates above do not work, or you want it built around a course you are teaching, say so — and if what you are after is not in the catalogue at all, say that instead. Both start the same way.
