Professor Amy Lemmon (English and Communication Studies) had a curated collection of poetry-revision exercises living in static handouts. The ask: turn them into a tool that shakes a draft loose — while keeping AI entirely away from the poems themselves.
In Process
The corpus came first: revision exercises curated from trusted poetry sources (Addonizio & Laux, Gimenez, Richardson) — assembled and vetted by hand before any code was written.
The Craft
Claude Code built the full-stack React app; the exercises it serves are human-curated, not AI-generated. That boundary is the design: AI builds the instrument and never touches the creative act it supports.
Outcome
Randomization is the feature — a static list becomes a generative nudge that surprises the writer into a new approach on demand. A working model for AI in the humanities: new teaching tools without replacing the intellectual or creative work of the student.
